Anyone who has been involved with the law for a number of years  will know the increasing role that the European Union, and its laws, plays in our domestic system.  It is therefore vital for any lawyer to understand both domestic and EU law.  Whilst EU law can be frightening with its details, John Fairhurst overcomes this by providing an accessible and readable account in the Law of the European Union.

Law of the European Union is, like previous editions, divided in to four parts: constitutional and administrative law of the European Union; free movement of persons and services, and the rights of establishment; free movement of goods; and competition law.  Each chapter follows a similar structure: firstly, explaining the chapter's aims and, secondly, explaining the basic principles supported, where appropriate, by relevant case law and statutory provisions.  The chapter ends by explaining what principles the reader should understand and provides a list of additional reading.  It is also cross-referenced to the MyLawChamber website.

Law of the European Union is extremely well written.  It explains complex principles of EU Law in an accessible and readable way.  It is also well-balanced, providing an explanation of the principles followed by extracts or overviews of the relevant cases.  The author should be applauded for this approach.  It is also has a companion MyLawChamber website.  Unlike some similar websites, this is an excellent and interactive feature and really helps a student understand the material.

Law of the European Union by John Fairhurst provides a fantastic introduction to the principles of EU Law.  It quickly allows the reader to understand the principles in an accessible way (which is not an easy task on its own!).  I thoroughly recommend this text to anyone studying or interested in EU Law.  The constant developments in this area of law also make the companion MyLawChamber website an excellent addition.
