Equity and Trusts Law: Directions forms part of OUP's new 'directions' series of texts which attempt to look at the law in innovative and unique ways to encourage understanding of often notoriously complex and difficult areas of law. Written by an experienced academic lawyer, Equity and Trusts Law: Directions is separated into twenty chapters with all but two being devoted to trusts and trustees. I would have liked more consideration of equitable doctrines and remedies, which are extremely important in practice. Each chapter of Equity and Trusts Law: Directions adopts a similar approach by initially explaining the learning objectives (together with a photo which should mean something by the end of the chapter!) and then tackling the material in short and manageable sections. Where relevant, the author includes case summaries (with a different coloured background to quickly distinguish it from the main text) together with thinking points and 'outside the box' points (where Watt gives unusual but interesting situations for the reader to consider). Finally, Watt provides a chapter summary, specimen questions (with, importantly answers on the Online Resource Centre) followed by a list of further reading. Equity and Trusts Law: Directions is well-written and provides an excellent overview of what is often considered a stuffy and difficult area of law. Watt makes excellent use of case-law and 'out of the box' examples to encourage the reader's understanding of the law. There are also other excellent features including the online resource centre and the glossary. To my mind, this is an invaluable text for students studying equity and trusts law. Now, if only I could work out what the photographs mean...... Reviewed on 12 April 2009 © Student Law Journal, 2001 - All Rights Reserved |
