Those students studying family law will be aware it covers many distinct areas of law like crime, 'pure' family, equity, trusts, probate and civil.  This means that students have to grapple with various different principles and, as a consequence, a substantial number of statutes.  To overcome this problem and if you are looking for a well-selected and accessible collection of statutes, you need look no further than Core Statutes on Family Law 2008-2009.

Edited by a leading academic family lawyer, Core Statutes on Family Law 2008-2009 includes the usual family law statutes like the imaginatively named Family Law Act 1996 and Maintenance Orders Act 1950 but other important statutes like the Supreme Court Act 1981, the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 and, more recently, the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 1997.  By expertly selecting the more relevant statutes, Burton ensures the text remains true to its title.

The layout of Core Statutes on Family Law 2008-2009 is excellent.  Before embarking on the material, it lists them in chronological and alphabetical order ensuring that the relevant statute can be quickly found.  Similarly, whilst the statutes follow on from each other (and not beginning on a new page which is an issue of style) each page's header includes the name of the statute first appearing on that page.  Section headings and statute titles are also quickly distinguishable from the remaining text by the use of bold and a slightly bigger font: these are key ingredients to a successful statute book.

Students often overlook the importance of a good statute book: if you have a bad one you will often spend too much time looking for the relevant provision in your book.  If you have a good one, it is quickly found and understood making it easier to achieve those better marks.  Frances Burton's Core Statutes on Family Law 2008-2009 is certainly one of the best statute books by providing an excellent selection of statutes together with a clear presentation.  It is sure to become a favourite for students for years to come.
