Like many subjects, employment law is heavily dependent upon statutory provisions and case-law.  To help the reader tackle this problem, there are many textbooks drawing together cases and materials.  One such example is Cases and Materials on Employment Law which aims to provide a "laptop labour law library" and, to my mind, largely achieves this.

Written by two experienced academic employment lawyers, Cases and Materials on Employment Law adopts a logical approach by initially explaining employment contracts.  It then discusses topical issues which often come before Employment Tribunals like equal pay, termination of the contract, unfair dismissal and redundancy.  Finally, it considers the role of Trade Unions together with conflicts and health and safety issues.  By dealing with the material in this way, the authors ensure that the reader can, if necessary, delve into relevant parts without needing to read the whole chapter.

Cases and Materials on Employment Law has an excellent balance between cases and materials.  For ease of reading, all extracts have a grey background meaning they can be quickly distinguished from the commentary, questions and notes: this is a superb feature.  Like a number of texts published by Oxford University Press, it also has an Online Resource Centre which, at the date of this review, carries no updates (although some are promised).

Because of employment law's mixture of legislation and case-law, a solid understanding of the issues is fundamental.  Cases and Materials on Employment Law goes a long way to satisfying this requirement by providing a clear and predominantly coherent account of the principles, case-law and materials.  It is hoped that the Online Resource Centre is, like the authors say, regularly updated.
