It has been some ten years since the last edition of Cases and Materials on Employment Law was published.  Now in its third edition, it incorporates the latest developments in the law.  Its aim does, however, remain simple: to provide a "portable library containing the most important primary materials".  This aim is easily achieved.

Written by a high respected academic employment lawyer, Cases and Materials on Employment Law adopts a similar approach to many other employment textbooks by initially looking at employment contracts and employee status before moving onto employee rights and claims following dismissal.  It also tackles the topical issue of redundancy and transfer of employees before finally tackling trade unions and industrial action.  This logical approach ensures the text has an enjoyable flow.

For me, cases and materials texts can sometimes be frustrating and take much of the fun out of reading judgments and identifying the issues.  Cases and Materials on Employment Law is, however, an excellent text: the materials are superbly selected and are wonderfully woven into the comments and notes.  Pitt also draws on her considerable expertise of employment law by posing a number of interesting and thought-provoking questions throughout the text.

For many students (and practitioners!), Cases and Materials on Employment Law is an indispensible guide to the most important primary materials on this fast moving and engaging area of law.  It is well written and provides excellent value for money.  At the time of writing there is (impressively!) already an update on the companion website meaning its longevity and usefulness is assured.  It is a text which will, no doubt, save valuable time searching through primary sources in the library.
