For any commercial litigator, a thorough understanding of costs is extremely important.  Since the introduction of the Solicitors Code of Conduct 2007, lawyers are under an increased duty to explain their fees and give proper attention to costs.  Cook on Costs 2009 provides a clear and authoritative account of both contentious and non-contentious costs, allowing lawyers to quickly understand the important principles.

Written by a leading expert on costs, Cook on Costs 2009 explains the key principles in an engaging and accessible way.  For the 2009 Edition, the author has added an excellent new chapter of the important topic of third party funding.  Like the previous edition, Cook on Costs 2009 is divided into six main parts: solicitor and client; between the parties; quantification; sanctions and penalties; particular people; and funding.  This approach ensures the material remains relevant and manageable and is one of the keys to the text's success.

Cook on Costs 2009 impressively explains the key principles by including (where appropriate) extracts from the Civil Procedure Rules and the Costs Practice Direction.  This saves a busy practitioner both time and resources.  The text also includes a number of sample precedents (including a form of wording for a costs capping order) which are excellent.  Other impressive features include the explanation of the important and developing costs capping procedure.

I have no reservation in recommending Cook on Costs 2009 to any lawyer, particularly litigation lawyers.  It impressively explains the important principles in a clear, concise and friendly way.  By doing so, Cook on Costs 2009 is the first port of call for anyone needing an answer to a costs point.  You need not look any further!
